Space Inbetween
Worapong Manupipatpong

The series of spatial structures are combination and overlapping of basic architectural-elements (roof, floor, wall, window, and ladder) and furniture feature (platform with different level for seating, laying, leaning). The shape and form represent contemporary architecture with simplicity of form but complex spaces. These structures can be seen as a transition between inside and outside. It provides variety of posture and different level with intimate space.

It’s about the quality of smallness. Smallness is probably the spatial quality that reminds us childhood nostalgia when we can access to most of the small spaces in our home. We can no longer play under the table, be hide the couch, or hide in the wardrobe. There are no such secrete spaces anymore when our body has grown up. Those small spaces still exist and visible, but not accessible anymore. I’m intrigued by particular spaces and things when they can’t be classified exactly; something in-between. It leaves me with curiosity and space for imagination. My project can be seen as something in-between because it is hard to define. Whether it is extra small architecture or an extra large piece of furniture, it is somewhere in-between these aspects of scale and function.

The work is about exploration of in-between architectural scale and furniture scale. It is too small to categories as architecture, but rather too big to see as a piece furniture. Beside I see this designed object as a transition between interior and exterior space. The series of small spatial structure function as furniture with spatial quality. It can be interact like small shelter and outdoor furniture. It has a quality of mobility like furniture. You must go in and climb up instead of just sit on. It provides different position of posture and different height with intimate space.

All of them are constructed by pine wood, which is in a way very traditional material for making both furniture and architecture. These structures can be seen as a transition between inside and outside. It’s more or less like a room without furniture and circulation only the usable space in between furniture and architectural space. It provides variety of posture and different level with intimate space. The series of small structure could be used as furniture in a park, street furniture, or create semi private space in public space.
